South Africa and the DRC: Has Rhodes passed on the baton?

Wed, 04/29/2015 - 04:31
In the heat of the struggle for statues like that of Rhodes – the arch-symbol of British imperialism – to be pulled down, and in the midst of the horror of the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa, few people seemed to notice an announcement by Jacob Zuma that South African troops will remain at war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) for another year.

Of course, Zuma made this announcement on behalf of the South African ruling class – comprised today of white capitalists and a black elite mainly centred around the state, Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) and ‘traditional’ royal families. In this there was a real irony that while Rhodes’s likeness was falling from its perch at the University of Cape Town, and immigrants from other parts of Africa and Asia were being attacked because of sentiments stoked up by a rehabilitated relic of apartheid (the Zulu king, Zwelithini), the South African ruling class felt brash enough to say they will be continuing their own imperialist war in the DRC.

Nonviolence as Compliance

Wed, 04/29/2015 - 01:47
Officials calling for calm can offer no rational justification for Gray's death, and so they appeal for order.

End ANZAC Day

Sun, 04/26/2015 - 08:18
Instead of glorifying the military prowess of the Anzacs, we should be building the working class movement which can sweep away all capitalist States. We need a revolution that will establish libertarian communism, a world of liberty, equality and solidarity, where war and militarism exist no more, except as exhibits in museums and lessons from history.

The Armenian Genocide: An Open Wound

Fri, 04/24/2015 - 03:52
To the memory of Stepan Shaumyan, Armenian Bolshevik leader of the Baku Commune in 1918, and of Hrant Dink, Armenian socialist intellectual from Istanbul who, until his assassination in 2007, exerted a Herculean effort to bring the genocide into the centre of attention in Turkey.

Anarkismo message of support to 1st Congress of Columna Libertaria Joaquín Penina

Wed, 04/22/2015 - 05:47
We are very pleased to be able to congratulate you on the realisation of your First Congress as a specific anarchist political organisation. In light of the disbanding of the Federación Anarco-Comunista Argentina we believe that this is a very important step both for our shared especifista tendency as well as for the development of anarchism in general, both in Argentina and the region.

Fortress Europe and a Mediterranean Cemetery for Migrants

Wed, 04/22/2015 - 01:53
In the night between April 18th and April 19th a boat filled with up to 950 migrants sank in the Mediterranean Sea, 70 miles north of Libya, while trying to reach the southern European border. This was not only the greatest tragedy to date involving migrants in the Mediterranean Sea, it is also the last of a long series of deaths: around 14,600 from 1993 to November, 2012; 900 in little more than a year from January, 2014 to April, 2015, before this latest tragedy.

International call for solidarity with the case of Nicolás Neira

Tue, 04/21/2015 - 05:17
“In order to describe heaven, it is not necessary to transport up there earthy materials. It is necessary to abandon earth, its materials, in order to embellish life with its ideal” –Isidore Ducasse.

With anger in our hearts and a deep sense of injustice is that we remember Nicolás David Neira Álvarez, a 15 year old young man, whose early affinity with anarchist ideas led him to be bludgeoned by the Colombian riot police (ESMAD) to the point that the constant banging of his head against the pavement damaged his brain matter. This happened during the heavy handed repression against the anarchist block during the May Day demonstrations in Bogotá, 2005. He would pass away on the 6 of March.

1st Congress of the Anarchist Federation of Rosario

Tue, 04/21/2015 - 05:09
7 years of the Columna Libertaria Joaquín Penina
During the months of March and April we held our first congress as a political organisation. We opened a new phase in our organisation and that is why we have decided to reflect this by changing its name for one that takes fuller account of our organisational forms and our horizons of construction. As such, the Anarchist Federation of Rosario is the continuation of the Columna Libertaria Joaquín Penina.

We have been organised as anarchists for seven years, in which we have tried to make our libertarian contribution to the resistance and struggles of our oppressed class. This journey which, although with comings and goings, fruit of successes and failures, demonstrates a marked tendency to consolidate ourselves as a political organisation, a reference of organised anarchism in the city of Rosario, and it is as such that we believe we can (and must) take another step in strengthening our anarchist political organisation.

The Bizarre US-Iranian Negotiations

Sun, 04/19/2015 - 15:16
The US and other imperial powers hypocritically demand that Iran limits its nuclear energy and military programs, in unilateral "negotiations." But while internationalists reject US hypocrisy and bullying, we should not accept nuclear bombs or energy by any nation.

Palestine-Israel, The joint struggle continues with fresh conviction that it is a fulcrum of the international lever

Sat, 04/18/2015 - 06:56
Bil'in, Ma'sara, Ni'ilin, Nabi Saleh, Qaddum, South of Hebron Hills, Sheikh Jarrah
With the conviction that our main contribution is not so much in changes on the ground but in the spirit of the struggle of the participants and the fulcrum we provide to the international lever. The gradual increase in international pressure which the Israeli high court verdict is that is a criminal act for Israeli to promote causing already much of damages in the economy of occupation and concern of the Zionist-colonialist Israeli ruling Elite. We see here again how small number of activists can initiate a turn in the course of history when it is applied in the ripe cross-road. It started in a small joint camp in Masha 2003 for struggle against the separation fence, after the idea raised half a year earlier in the European People Global Action conference in Leiden - in which activists from the East of the Mediterranean region participated too. The camp initiated struggles in various villages that riped at 2005 in the Bil'in struggle... which expanded and expanded...

Menace in Europe

Mon, 04/13/2015 - 10:49
Lessons on unassimilated fascist Islam in Europe
Now that the grief over the terror attack on the Parisian satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo and on a kosher supermarket has subsided, overtaken by outrage at the far larger massacres perpetrated in Africa by Boko Haram in Nigeria and al-Shabab in Kenya, allow me to offer some observations about the cuckoo in the nest: unassimilated fascist Islam in Europe. I will rely here on some personal anecdotes of my time spent in Paris, the insights of French comrades, and in particular on Claire Berlinski's book Menace in Europe: Why the Continent's Crisis is America's Too (Crown Forum, New York, 2006).

Bolivia: Burdens of a State Manager

Mon, 04/13/2015 - 05:44
In the opening salvos of Latin America’s uneven lurch to the Left in the early twenty-first century, Bolivia distinguished itself as the region’s most radical socio-political terrain.1 Left-indigenous movements in the countryside and cityscapes alike threw the state into crisis and brought two successive neoliberal presidents to their knees – Gonzalo Sánchez de Lozada in 2003, and Carlos Mesa in 2005.2 Evo Morales’s party, the Movimiento al Socialismo (Movement Towards Socialism, MAS), leapt into the power vacuum opened up by this series of revolts, and there has been serious debate on the Left as to how best to button down the central political dynamic of the country ever since. In a country where 62 percent of the population self-identified as indigenous in the 2001 census, Morales became the first indigenous president through the December 2005 elections with 54 percent of the popular vote, assuming office in January 2006. He repeated this extraordinary electoral success in December 2009, with 64 percent, and again in October 2014, with 61 percent.

Fascists crawl out of the sewers

Thu, 04/09/2015 - 06:40
Fascism is a movement of the ruined middle classes (e.g. small business going out backwards), who aim to take State power by, or with the assistance of, extra-legal force in order to resolve their problems at the expense of the working class. In attempting this, it makes use of demoralised sections of the unemployed who can think little further than where their next meal is coming from.

Palestine-Israel, The collapse of the deterrent ability of Israel in the last Gaza war is expressed every where*

Tue, 04/07/2015 - 16:37
The frustrated Israeli state force who do not dare to prevent the weekly non armed popular demonstrations - Joined and purely of Palestinians, resort to shooting on demonstrators with frequent use of live fire by snippers. In the annexed regions of Jerusalem they no more pretend it is not an occupied area and apply there the occupation procedures - both in treatment of detaining children and houses demolition. The "hot" areas of the popular non armed struggle gradually expand but still far away from a general uprising. The international popular struggle worry the Israeli elite but the damages to the Israeli economy is still in the margins. It seems the Zionist settler colonialist elite which bribed the tycoons section of the capitalist elite with extreme neo liberal measures cannot do it any more as other sections of the capitalist elite (backers of Cakhlon) rebelled.

The struggle for the environment

Mon, 04/06/2015 - 06:50
Through libertarian communism we can reach a point of balance between the capacities to produce, the needs of populations, and the limits of the biosphere. We cannot build our future in opposition to the rest of life. The ideology of domination must be broken everywhere, so that humanity can find a safe future on its planet.

Bridges between anarchism and democratic confederalism – 2

Fri, 04/03/2015 - 18:27
Introduction to this particular issue, April 2nd Bruno Lima Rocha

[South Africa] End the de facto State of Emergency in Themelihle

Tue, 03/31/2015 - 08:58
The Thembelihle Crisis Committee, the United Front (UF), the Right to Know (R2K) Campaign and the Democratic Left Front call on all people of good conscience in South Africa to endorse the call for an end to the security siege of Thembelihle. Since the 25th of February 2015, Thembelihle has faced a de facto State of Emergency at the hands of the South African Police Services (SAPS) and other security agents. This undeclared, unofficial State of Emergency in Thembelihle is an attack on all our constitutionally guaranteed rights to and freedoms to organise, associate and freely express ourselves. We call for urgent action to put pressure on the SAPS to end the siege. We call for the creation of conducive conditions for free, open and democratic political activity in which the people of Thembelihle may express and exercise their right to protest, and have their demands for a decent life of dignity met.

Recovering Portugal's Mass Anarchist History

Mon, 03/30/2015 - 09:54
a review of João Freire's Freedom Fighters: Anarchist Intellectuals, Workers, and Soldiers in Portugal's History
Overshadowed in most histories by the Spanish anarchist movement next door, the Portuguese movement may have been numerically smaller but was relatively, by head of population, a *larger* movement, with the anarchosyndicalist CGT achieving an almost totally hegemonic position in the working class.
